Commitment

Following the Bible reading we studied about in Nehemiah 8 and the repentance and confession we saw in Nehemiah 9, we heard from Wayne about the commitment the people made in Nehemiah 10—the logical next step in their spiritual growth.

The priests, Levites, leaders of the people, gatekeepers, musicians and others all bound themselves with “a curse and an oath to follow the Law of God given through Moses the servant of God and to obey carefully all the commands, regulations and decrees of the Lord our Lord.” (Neh. 10:29)

Among other things, the people committed to not letting their daughters intermarry (be separate from the world); no business on the Sabbath (take the time to rest); and paid the annual temple tax (took care of the church).

For our application, the obvious lesson is what are you committed to—and what do you need to commit to when it comes to following God’s direction and word? A relationship that needs to be righted? Dedicated time for Bible reading? Boost your prayer life? One-on-one time with your wife and/or children? More time with other men in your life to help you navigate life?
