Hospitality can mean so much more than just a meal together. Hospitality is the door to community. Discover what it means to reach out to our friends, neighbors, and co-workers by simply inviting them with an opportunity to gather. While the art of hospitality may come easy for some, it may be quite difficult for others. After all, it's not always easy to give of yourself, much less your hard-earned gains. This class is part bible study, part practical application, and an opportunity to glean from relevant speakers.  Join us this fall as we explore genuine hospitality, we’ll be reading from the book - The Turquoise Table by Kristin Schell.

Creative Community

Wednesdays at 7pm  |  March 1-29

Creative Community is series of exciting, creatively-focused workshops designed to develop your abilities while deepening your walk with God. It'll be a great opportunity to learn, interact, share, and grow through this semester. Take a look at the workshop descriptions, pick your class, and register by clicking below!

WORKSHOPS

STUDENT WORSHIP TEAM

If you are a middle school or high school student currently involved or would like to be involved in the 678 or HSM Worship Team or Production Team, join Murph as he provides a fun, interactive time of learning how to grow as a musician, worship leader, vocalist, or production volunteer.

INTRO TO POST-PRODUCTION EFFECTS

Want to learn how to make your own lightsaber fight scene, create psychedelic video effects, or animate your own movie titles or lyric video? Learn the basics of Adobe After Effects in this class, as we explore beginner techniques for Visual Effects and Motion Graphic Animation. No previous experience is necessary for this introductory class. A USB thumb drive (8 GB or larger) is recommended so you can work on projects at home if you choose, but not required.

SKETCHING

This five-week course will begin with basic sketching concepts and progress toward increasingly finer work. We’ll work in graphite, charcoal, conte crayons, pastels, and watercolor pencil as Venture artist Clyde Beck helps us to progressively define a subject toward making it a work of art. If you have a concept you want to work on, that will be great, otherwise Clyde will suggest some subjects for you to choose from. When you sign up for the class Clyde will provide you with a list of materials you will need to bring or buy for this class.

VOCAL LEADING

Get ready to stretch yourself vocally and expressively as we dive into this exciting class! In Vocal Leading, we will cover healthy vocal technique, vocal parts in harmony, worshipful posture, expressive leading, and stage movement. No materials are needed for this class. Just bring yourself and an open and encouraging attitude, as this will be a collaborative and interactive experience.

CREATIVE ARTS PROJECTS

We will be discussing composition and design as you create your own objet d’ art journal and learn Japanese Notan design. No experience is necessary, just a love of creative activity. Class materials will cost $15.

BEHIND THE SCENES

When asked about the Production team, we tend to think of the most obvious aspects: lights, cameras, and... sound. But it actually takes a lot of people behind the scenes to make services run smoothly. In this course, we will explore those less-technical areas for anyone who might be interested in joining the team. Topics will include service producing, stage management, lyrics and slides, and live video directing, taught by team members and church staff. Sound intimidating? Each week will be designed to show how easy it can actually be to get involved in production arts.

MARKETING PLATFORMS: DIGITAL & SOCIAL MEDIA

Whether you are marketing for your business, supporting church activities or someone with an important message, a well thought out platform using digital and social media is an effective way to get your message out to your community. So what is a platform? A platform can be a plug-and-play model that allows multiple participants (producers and consumers) to connect to it, interact with each other, and create and exchange value. This is an introductory workshop, and we’ll identify and explore the best platforms for your message.

WORKSHOPS

WORSHIP LEADING

In this class we will discover the heart of worship, as well as learn the practical, hands on skills you'll need to lead worship in small groups and large environments. This class is open to current worship leaders at Venture, as well as those with a serious interest in joining the team.

Teacher Bios

Lucas is an Aussie from Sydney, Australia who began writing and recording music at age 16. He moved to the USA in mid-2002 after meeting his wife, Jody, on a mission trip in India. His passion for worship has taken him across the globe to over 30 countries with songs recorded on CD projects by worship leaders, country bands and solo artists. He has also had the privilege of leading award-winning creative teams producing short films, concert productions, web technology and more.

Shep Gibson is a singer, songwriter, and composer from Western North Carolina who currently co-leads worship right here at Venture Christian Church. He graduated from Furman University (Greenville, SC) with a bachelor’s degree in composition and has been a part of many performing vocal ensembles. He enjoys traveling, being with friends, and acting goofy.

Lexi Hausmann was born and raised in the Silicon Valley, and has been leading worship since age 16. Leading worship is both a calling and a passion of hers, and she seeks to help others connect with the Lord in a new way through worship and expression. She enjoys songwriting and playing guitar, belting Carrie Underwood hits in the car, and roaming the aisles of Barnes and Noble.

SOCIAL MEDIA

Everyone’s Posting or Blogging, Should I? Almost everyone is using Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and Google+ to broadcast their latest experiences. But how can it be used to promote your business, church, service, or point-of-view? This class will be an interactive session designed to identify the best approach for your type of message. Whether you are a business person, supporting your church activities, or someone with an important message, you can use social media to advance your cause. There are right ways, questionable ways, and wrong ways to use it. We’ll start with three common social media platforms, Facebook Pages, Twitter, and LinkedIn, and dive into other platforms as well.

Teacher Bios

Join us for Freedom Night, a monthly gathering dedicated to corporate prayer and worshipful expression. Each month is led by members of the Venture worship and prayer teams, and consists of worship through music and prayer for the life of our church.  The idea behind Freedom Night is to seek “freedom” in the expression of worship, so no two Freedom Nights look quite the same.

A growing church is a praying church, so join us on the first Thursday of each month in Venue 2 for an opportunity to worship and pray for our church and one another.

EXPLORING NIGHT PHOTOGRAPHY:

You've got a Digital, Single Lens Reflex (DSLR) camera, and you are getting fairly good at it. Now it is time to try something new and creative: photos taken at night. Night photos can reveal the amazing majesty of the night sky (Isaiah 40:26). You will learn how to photograph in low-light using your DSLR. Along the way you will learn a little about the night sky and several photography techniques that will aid all of your photography efforts. Most of all you'll be amazed at how much there is in the dark that remains unseen without the aid of a camera. You just might unleash a creative direction you may have never considered. This is a hands-on course. You will be taking photos on the very first session of the course, so bring all the equipment listed in the prerequisites.

Prerequisites:

  • Must have a DSLR camera (smart phones are not acceptable)

  • Must understand the basics of exposures - i.e. the relationship between f-stop (aperture), sensitivity and exposure length, and have shot photographs in some mode other than "Automatic".

  • Your camera's operators manual

Also recommended are:

  • A tripod- strongly recommended!
  • A remote release (cable)
  • An Intervalometer (Steven will have some to loan)
  • Extra batteries
