Can you share a little about your call to ministry and passion for the church?
I was called into ministry while I was in college. I had a couple of years where I ran from God because I was scared He was calling me into ministry. Even though I was a believer, I was afraid to submit all if my life to Him. God brought me to the end of myself and forced me to face my fears. When I released control to Him, I realized that He had created me for ministry. Specifically, He created me to serve the church. That was 30 years ago and I am still passionate about the church. I believe Christ empowers His church to change the world. As people experience Christ in new ways, He changes them. I love being a part of that process and seeing Him impact families, communities, cities and the world.
What do you want people to know about you on a personal level?
I am such a blessed man. I love my wife – 27 years of marriage have been filled with friendship and adventure. I love my family – having a large family has been one of my greatest joys in life. I love sports probably more than I should. I like to read, enjoy a great meal out with Lea and friends, and start each day with a great cup of coffee.
How did you and your wife meet?
We actually attended the same high school but didn’t really know each other well. In college, we were both serving in the college ministry at our church. While serving together we became great friends first and then we fell in love. Truth be told, I fell first, but my persistence paid off. Serving in church and doing ministry together has always been part of our relationship.
How would you describe your wife?
She is such a beautiful person inside and out. She loves me more than I deserve and has always been an incredible mother. She loves Jesus and always has a heart for people who don’t know Him.
How would she describe you?
Strong leader. Passionate about Christ and the church. Deeply loves his wife and kids. Rugged good looks (actually, I added that part).
At the core, because I believe God has called me to serve there. I am thankful, because Venture has a history of God moving through His people. Chip has led the church well and I am thankful to build on that foundation of ministry. On a personal note, my family loves the people at Venture. If is not often that you get to return to serve people you love.
Why Silicon Valley?
As I read through Scripture, God sends His people to strategic places in order to impact the world – Rome, Ephesus, Corinth. I believe Silicon Valley is one of the most strategic places on this planet – truly an epicenter of influence. If we reach the Valley for Christ – we reach the world. There are few places on this planet with such strategic impact.
